Free Tool to Cut Energy Bills for SME Hospitality Now Launched

Free Tool to Cut Energy Bills for SME Hospitality Now Launched
  • To build back lost profits for SMEs in the hospitality sector, Zero Carbon Services has launched a free energy and carbon reduction tool helping businesses understand their energy use, reduce waste and cut bills

  • Nearly £2,500 has been saved per site by initial users of the tool, with some cutting overnight energy use by up to 66%

  • Fully funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, only 525 licences are available, so operators are encouraged to apply now

At a time when energy bills are squeezing hospitality margins, Zero Carbon Services, who specialise in working with hospitality and brewing operators to reach net zero, is launching a free energy and carbon reduction tool for pubs, restaurants, and bars in England.

It has been built with hospitality businesses, for hospitality businesses. The tool has been designed to easily see how energy is being used and where the reduction opportunities are, and how to reduce energy and track the savings, both in pounds and carbon.

Better still, the platform is fully funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), meaning it’s free for eligible SMEs across England.

Chris McDonald, Minister for Industry said: “We’re extending support to help more businesses slash bills and protect Britain’s hospitality sector.  Our pubs and restaurants are playing a leading role in cutting emissions, which is not only good for the planet but for cutting their costs too.”

From trial run to service launch

Before launching the tool, Zero Carbon Services has worked with hospitality SMEs to test and refine the tool through a live trial.

The aim was to make energy data useful, not overwhelming, and for operators to unlock big savings by making small changes easily and quickly.

The result is a self-serve online tool that gives businesses direct access to their energy data, clear insights into what’s happening behind the scenes, and practical support to help turn information into action, all in one place, for one year.

The proof is in the pudding (or the pint)

Two real world examples bring the energy and cost savings to life.

The first is a pub in Bromley that was looking to get a better handle on its energy use.

They were using 735 kWh of energy per week (overnight hours). By week 18, that figure had dropped to 396 kWh per week, a reduction of 26%, saving them £48 per week.

Over a year, that reduction will prevent £2,496 of profit being lost to energy waste.

Even more impressively, these savings were achieved through a cold winter and the busy Christmas period.

Another smaller pub in Caterham saw its overnight energy use fall by 66%, meaning savings of over £1,500 a year.

Mark Chapman, CEO of Zero Carbon Services, commented: “When you put energy savings into real hospitality terms, the impact becomes very clear. Saving around £2,000 a year is the equivalent of the profit from selling thousands of pints, or the breathing space that protects hard-won margins during quieter months. We're showing that climate action doesn’t have to be a trade-off. When energy is managed better, businesses become more efficient, more resilient and better placed to invest back into their teams, their venues and their future.”

Helping hospitality SMEs cut costs and carbon

By making energy data visible, understandable and easy-to-action, Zero Carbon Services aims to support the SMEs in the hospitality sector to uncover savings and strengthen resilience while accelerating progress towards net zero.

With only 525 licences available, businesses are encouraged to check their eligibility and register for free now: www.zerocarboncompany.org/energy-reduction-tool

Larger pubcos with tenants and franchisees are also encouraged to get in touch, with packages available to support their carbon and cost reduction efforts.
